Confirm the quantity available for release first
Start with SKU, condition, location and the quantity actually approved for release. Keep uninspected returns, reservations and in-transit units separate. Also record permitted channels and required approvals before offering stock.
Compare three routes on the same basis
Use the same quantity and period for continued sales in the existing channel, approved reworking and bulk release. Record expected proceeds, remaining costs and payment timing for each route. Show already-paid purchase costs separately so they are not deducted again as future payments.
Set the next decision date
Review the comparison when more storage time or slower sell-through changes the assumptions. For the selected route, record quantity, approval, handover date and evidence of actual outbound movement. Decide new purchasing using a separate demand scenario.
Plan step by step
- Record saleable, reserved and blocked quantities separately by SKU. Show stock location, ownership and condition in the stock list.
- Review stock movement and age. Assess seasonal products, damaged returns and unused surplus separately; historic purchase price alone does not establish recoverable proceeds.
- Compare continued sales, reworking and bulk release on the same cost basis: expected proceeds less transport, inspection, packaging, storage and selling costs. Use scenarios rather than assumed guaranteed sale prices.
- Document allowed sales channels, brand restrictions, minimum quantities and reworking approval. Agree a target date and decision criteria with the team.
- Set a decision date and owner for each route. Track sell-through, tied-up capital and added storage cost until that date; decide new purchasing separately from releasing existing surplus.
Compare your options
On small screens, scroll horizontally to read every column.
| Route | Comparison inputs | Approval checkpoint |
|---|---|---|
| Continued sales | Demand scenario, storage duration, shipping and selling costs | Review date and owner for price and channel |
| Reworking | Inspection, materials, labour and expected sellable quantity | Approve scope and costs before execution |
| Bulk release | Confirmed offer, collection, outbound handling and payment date | Confirm quantity, channel and handover evidence |
Decide before the next purchase order
- Which SKU ties up space and capital while other products sell faster?
- What costs accrue before the agreed review date, and who approves a channel change?
